Also, conservators contribute to the program activities with the protection and presentation of works of art, participate in the preparation and realization of the exhibitions, as well as in the packaging and shipping the exhibits. The peculiarity of the Conservation and Restoration Atelier is reflected in the constant professional development of employees through national and international partnerships, the organization of collection care of the Gallery of Matica Srpska, once a collection of paintings of the Museum of Matica Srpska, dates back to the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. Documented records valuable for the history of conservation of paintings in the Gallery of Matica Srpska have been preserved, such as the decision of the Management Board of Matica Srpska from 1972, that says &#8220;it is not allowed to smoke in the Matica\u2019s Hall so as not to damage paintings and gilded frames&#8221;. The preparation of the paintings for the exhibition before the opening of the Matica Srpska Museum for the public in 1933 was entrusted to the Russian immigrant Vladimir Kurochkin, the former museum manager from Odessa. A noteworthy letter from the painter Uro\u0161 Predi\u0107, the honorary president of the Museum Board of Matica Srpska, dates from the same period, in which the recommendations for the preservation and conservation of paintings are summarized.<\/p>\n<p>The first post-war conservator of the Matica Srpska Gallery, since 1950, was Jovan Sevdi\u0107, who equipped the first atelier. Ten years later, on the 1<sup>st<\/sup> of January 1960, a special department was established in the Gallery of Matica Srpska \u2013 The Conservation and Restoration Atelier. The first team of conservators were Rista \u0106inkulov and Vladimir Bogdanovi\u0107. They did a great job in collecting and systematical protection of icons from the churches of Ba\u010dka, Baranja, western Srem and Slavonia. A large number of icons painted by Serbian painters of the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century were collected and restored.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<style>\n#text-1387009214 {\n  text-align: left;\n}\n<\/style>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n<style>\n#col-860852416 > .col-inner {\n  margin: 0px 0px 30px 0px;\n}\n<\/style>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1424932054\" class=\"col maxwidth960 medium-6 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner text-left\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\n\t<div id=\"text-975992438\" class=\"text\">\n\t\t\n\n<p>At that time, the tradition of the Northern European school of conservation dominated, based on the use of wax for the conservation of paintings on canvas and icons. Consequently, these techniques and materials were used in the conservation of most artworks of the Permanent Exhibition of the Gallery Matica Srpska, as well.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all the difficulties related to high personnel turnover and unfavorable conditions of the 90\u2019s of past century , the Conservation Atelier survived thanks to the art historian and conservator Ratomir Kuli\u0107. Major conservation works are performed on selected works in accordance with the plan of exhibition activities and priorities. On the occasion of the preparations for the Permanent Exhibition of Serbian Art of the 18<sup>th<\/sup>, 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> c., numerous works of art were re-studied and appropriate conservation procedures applied.<\/p>\n<p>Among the comprehensive conservation and restoration procedures, we point out the work on the icon <em>Beheading of Ten Cretan Martyrs<\/em> from 1694, as well as the icon of <em>the Annunciation<\/em>, painted by an unknown icon painter of the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century, the work of Katarina Ivanovi\u0107, <em>Anka Topalovi\u0107. born Nenadovi\u0107 <\/em>from 1837, the portraits of the Beke\u0161 family from 1796 by Pavel \u0110urkovi\u0107, <em>Sailor at the pier<\/em>, <em>The Beach<\/em> and <em>Women bathing<\/em> of Sava \u0160umanovi\u0107. The challenge for GMS conservators was the conservation of large paintings for the exhibition <em>Large-Scale Paintings \u2013 the Testimony of an Epoch<\/em> where paintings by Paja Jovanovi\u0107, Petar Lubarda, Uro\u0161 Predi\u0107, Sava \u0160umanovi\u0107, \u0110ur\u0111e Teodorovi\u0107 and Afanasije \u0160eloumov were conserved and equipped.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the conservation of GMS deals with the conservation and restoration of artworks for other museums and related cultural institutions in the Republic of Serbia on the basis of concluded protocols and cooperation agreements. In the last decade conservation was done for numerous institutions such as National Museum Kikinda, National Museum \u0160abac, Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection, Gallery of paintings gift-collection of Rajko Mamuzi\u0107, Modern Gallery of Lazarevac, City Museum of Belgrade, Military Museum in Belgrade, Gallery of Central Military Club Serbia, Museum of Yugoslavia, Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Gallery of paintings \u201eSava \u0160umanovi\u0107\u201c in \u0160id, Museum of Srem, National Museum Kragujevac, and others. Through long-term cooperation with the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Gallery of Matica srpska also worked on the conservation of artworks for the Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Belgrade,
