Prado in the Streets

One of the most famous national museums will arrive to Novi Sad this Summer. The Gallery Square will host the Spanish Museum Prado and its rich art collections. The grand opening of the exhibition Prado in the Streets will take place on Thursday, June 26, at 8:00 PM at the Gallery Square. Those present will be addressed by Dr. Tijana Palkovljević Bugarski, director of the Gallery of Matica srpska, Alfonso Palacio Alvarez, deputy director of the Prado Museum, and His Excellency Mr. Juan José Sanz Aparicio, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Serbia. The grand opening of the exhibition will be followed by the start of the event Summer on the Gallery Square 2025 at 9:00 PM with a concert by the Aleksandar Dujin Orchestra.

The exhibition Prado in the Streets represents a unique cultural and artistic event that allows visitors to uniquely experience the artistic heritage of one of the most prominent museums in the world – The Prado from Madrid. Thirty reproductions of the most famous paintings from the collection of the renowned museum will be presented at the exhibition. The presented reproductions will offer visitors the chance to directly engage with the artworks by masters such as Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, and others.

The exhibition will be set up in an open area, at Gallery Square, enabling a wide range of citizens to experience art in an everyday urban environment, beyond traditional museum settings. This project aims to increase the accessibility of cultural content and foster interest in visual arts among all generations.

The initiative for the arrival of the exhibition to Novi Sad was undertaken by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in the hope of it becoming a meeting spot for two cultures similar in their temperament – Spanish and Serbian. Prado in the Streets marks the beginning of the collaboration between the Gallery of Matica srpska and this Spanish museum, allowing for professional development, collaboration and friendship.

We invite all art enthusiasts, as well as those yet to become one, to use this rare opportunity and engage with masterpieces of European painting – under the open sky, in the heart of our city.

The exhibition will be open until July 31, 2025.

The realization of the exhibition and the catalog was made possible by the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Spain, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in the Republic of Serbia, the Prado Museum, UNESCO, Eptisa, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, and the City Administration for Culture of Novi Sad.
